What is “evolving awareness” in plain language
Evolving awareness is the idea that awareness expands. It starts as internal experience, then grows outward. At first, awareness is mostly sensation. Over time, organisms perceive the external world, develop instinct, make choices in the present moment, and eventually become self aware.
Self awareness is powerful, but it has a catch. Once a mind can remember the past and imagine the future, it becomes aware of mortality. The ego forms a story of self, and that story can become the center of reality. That is where fear and self protection can take over.
The point of the model is not to insult the ego. The point is to show the next step. Awareness can expand beyond the self. Empathic awareness is the moment you realize other beings have an inner world as real as yours. It is the moment you choose to include them in your decisions.
If you want to practice this today, do it in one conversation. Notice your body, notice your emotion, then notice the other person’s experience, and respond in a way that reduces suffering instead of winning the moment.
